Affiliated to the University of Calcutta, Basanti Devi College was established in the year 1959 to deal effectively with the growing population of female applicants and students on the southern side of the city. Basanti Devi College is named after the freedom fighter Basanti Devi, the first woman to be imprisoned under British Rule in the country because of her constant contribution towards collective freedom. It is the first government-sponsored college catering to women exclusively. Placed in 147B, Rashbehari Avenue in Kolkata, the college is strategically positioned to offer its services to women of both rural as well as urban standing. The commendable objective that the institution works by is to educate women and contribute proactively towards women empowerment. Their mission is to provide quality education to girl students irrespective of caste, creed, religion, and economic status, to equip the students with relevant knowledge. Competence and creativity to face global challenges to develop a responsible and sensitive youth force that has social commitments towards the larger section of the society and to develop a commitment to the preservation of Environment with a goal towards sustainable development.

The college has been recognized by the University Grants Commission and is counted amongst the best colleges in West Bengal with a state of the art infrastructure and academic excellence along with several co-curricular activities organized by the administrative body itself which serves as a testament to the college’s efforts towards both, personality as well as educational development.

Students should ensure that they have scored passing marks in all subjects in their previous examinations for applying to Honours and General courses in the college. Those who are applying for Economics (Honours) and Statistics (Honours) must have scored passing marks in Mathematics at the High School or equivalent examination. Students with Political Science as a subject at the High School and equivalent level & applying for Political Science honors are given preference. Candidates interested in taking admission will have to visit and click on the link provided for filling up the admission forms online. Students may join a computer-training course conducted by WEBEL in the college and within the college, timings to enhance ones skill set that shall be more career-specific. Three percent of the seats are reserved for the candidates with Special Needs. The institution offers reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBC A & B students as per the rules of the State. For further support, even accident insurance is made available for the students.

The institute also organizes a Basanti Devi College Convergence Program which was otherwise initiated in the year 2008 with an intention to effect a merging of the traditional classroom-based studies with distant learning mode under one roof, along with many social initiatives aimed towards environmental growth and protection to indulge its students into a holistic approach.
