Engineering physics is the combination of several broad subjects such as theoretical physics, engineering, mathematics. The goal of Engineering Physics is to bring the use of physics to build complex engineering systems. Most colleges in India offer engineering physics as one of the subjects in engineering for all the various branches of engineering. But, Engineering Physics can also be taken as a full-fledged course. Like bachelor’s programs, engineering physics is a four year or eight-semester course. This course is fairly new to Indian students and is offered by a select few universities or colleges.
The eligibility criteria for engineering physics are the same as any bachelor’s course, which is 10+2 or 10+diploma and qualifying an entrance test. The entrance test is generally IIT JEE. All of the IITs offer this course and its popularity has been growing steadily. Engineering physics generally deals with pure physics, or theoretical physics and applying those principals to build advanced technology. It brings together many branches of engineering. This involves a lot of math and hence, EP courses generally offer mathematics and data analytics as one of the subjects in the curriculum.
As a course, engineering physics tries to mix theory with practice. It teaches the theoretical principles of physics such as Newtonian physics, fluid mechanics, etc. and combines it with practical engineering by building projects using advanced technology. All the students of the EP course are expected to be able to deconstruct a physical system by the end of their course. It brings together principles of courses such as electrical engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, etc.
There is a lot of scope of development in the field as EP graduates can be engineers or physicists. EP grads work with high technology firms which work on cutting edge technologies. The demand for Engineering Physics students is growing in India as the world is on the verge of scientific breakthroughs. Engineering physics graduates know how to apply the principles of physics, the rules that govern the world to create mind-blowing technology. This has its perks, mainly the fact that any new scientific discovery is used by companies to create new technologies, the job market for EP graduates is in no way decreasing.
Although not a lot of colleges offer this course right now, the number is steadily increasing. It is important to remember that there are very few jobs that are exclusive only to engineering physics graduates. But, an engineering physics professional will be apt for any engineering or physics research work. Hence, job flexibility is high.
IITs are the most preferred colleges that offer EP as a course. But, some other colleges also offer the course. As only a few colleges offer the course, EP is not a popular course. But there are signs that this might change. EP works with new technologies such as nanotechnology, instrumentation, etc. Problem-solving, numerical aptitude, and practical thinking are crucial skills for Engineering Physics. As professionals with these skills are required in almost any engineering field, job flexibility is high. If working on new technologies and understanding how everything works is someone’s interest, Engineering Physics might be suitable for them.
