Mahatma Gandhi was the spokesman for the conscience of mankind.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. About halfway between Bombay and Karachi. He was married to Kasturba Gandhi in 1882, and they had for children “ Harilal Gandhi (1888 “ 1948), Manilal Gandhi (1892 “ 1956), Ramdas Gandhi (1896 “ 1969) and Devdas Gandhi (1900 _ 1957). He died on January 30th, 1948; Nathuram Godse killed him in New Delhi at the Birla House.

For over 200 years, England governed over many countries around the world including India. England was making new laws that Indians were against. Gandhi stood up and changed the whole history of India and some parts of the world. He risked his life just to save the country from the rule of the British. He successfully accomplished his goal on August 15th, 1947 which Indians celebrate as their Independence Day and the day the National flag was made. He gave the world a great message on non-violence and peace. Gandhi changed the lives of many people. He fought for civil rights and for freedom. He believed that discrimination and segregation were wrong and he decided to change it. He also influenced others by showing that you can achieve your goals without violence.

He organized a salt marsh, it was held against the taxes on salt by the British. He fasted to stop violence between Indians and Muslims in Calcutta 1947. His accomplishments cannot be said in words because of his selflessness as he did what he did with no desire for fame.
Gandhi went on many hunger strikes for protests against various issues. He did this because he thought that it would make the British realize that India wanted to be independent. Fasting is a very important thing to do in Indian culture.

  • In 1932 Gandhi went on a hunger strike to protest against the government for the plan of making more political parties in India. He thought India would separate even more instead of uniting and uniting was an important part of achieving independence.
  • In 1943 Gandhi went on a hunger strike during a two-year prison term which was part of the Quit India movement which demanded immediate independence from the British.
  • In 1948 Gandhi had his final hunger strike, it happened after a year of India getting Independence. The purpose was to persuade the world to always work with peace.

In fact, he was on a first-class train in South Africa, and he was sent to prison for seven years for refusing to give his seat to a European Passenger. He realized India and other countries around the world were being treated like he was being treated and he wanted to put an end to it. This is what motivated Gandhi to fight for the country. People all around the world look up to Gandhi as one of the most significant people that ever lived. Also, Gandhi is well known as MAHATMA GANDHI because Mahatma means great soul. Gandhi’s accomplishments made him a great soul.
