Mass media refers to various forms of media and communication that use technology to reach out to a vast populace. Mass communication can be divided into a few broad categories with one being broadcast media that uses electronic means to send out information such as radio, movies, and television. The other being mobile factors include digital media and the internet. The Internet gave rise to a new form of mass communication comprising of components such as emails, social media, websites, and online streaming services. With recent technological developments, it has become possible to combine two entirely different media of mass communication, for example, TV is connected to the internet.

Some of the physical forms of mass media include outdoor media which involves components like advertising, commercial building, kiosks, billboards, signs on public transport, etc. Print media involves aspects of written communication such as newspapers, books, magazines, pamphlets, etc. Unlike the most common perception that mass media is being used to transfer just news, it also plays an extremely crucial role when it comes to different aspects such as advertising, marketing, sharing propaganda, improving public relations, and also as a means of political communication. Mass media has also made it possible to get entertainment out to the masses, and the advent of the TV certainly helped to achieve this purpose. Mass media has also made it very easy to share public service announcements and emergency alerts. The earliest forms of media can be traced back to the ancient kingdoms which often involved a court structure and plays were regularly performed to entertain the rich. The invention of the printing press helped to make books and pamphlets widely popular. The design of the radio now made sharing of information even easier which was soon followed by telephones, TV and most recently the internet.

Disadvantages of Mass Communication

Though mass media has helped to make our lives a much better place, it doesn’t come without its own set of disadvantages. One would be the lack of exposure to local issues. Most media outlets tend to focus on a broader set of national and international news to cater to a more general audience which however takes away the attention from relevant, at hand problems. Digital media has been blamed to adversely affect the lifestyle leading to a rather sedentary way of living and continuous exposure to bright screens. Since mass media is a powerful tool and often acts as an opiate for the general public, it acts as a perfect tool which when controlled can be used to propagate wrong ideologies. The mass media can also be blamed to put filters and stereotypes in the minds of its audience thereby leading to a kind of social conditioning.

Social media has influenced the youth with a need for validation and the thin line between private and personal space is being continuously breached. Like all other great inventions, mass media has perhaps changed the way we live and view the world; however it has also made us slaves of our small screens and the internet. With proper usage, the true potential of mass media can be utilized appropriately.
