Physiotherapist Salary

Physiotherapy or Physical therapy is an allied health profession that uses mechanical force and movements and manual therapy, exercise therapy, and electrotherapy to remediate impairments and improve mobility and functioning of the human body. More precisely, physiotherapy is used to improve the physical condition of a person by treating muscle spasms, sprains, and other such injuries. In addition to clinical treatments, physiotherapy professionals may also indulge in research, education, and consultation. Very often, physical therapy is used as a complementary medicine instead of supplementary medicine. Physical therapy, unlike homeopathy, is very scientific and is proven to work. There are many institutes offering physiotherapy courses around the world.

In India, physiotherapy is a relatively popular course, and there are thousands of students enrolling in the course every year. BPT or Bachelor of Physiotherapy is a 4 and a half year-long undergraduate course in physiotherapy. It is the most popular of the physiotherapy courses and is also offered in most of the colleges. Physiotherapy focuses on the use of physical therapy, massages, and exercise and requires a high amount of practice. Hence, many physiotherapy courses are hands-on and require an internship before the completion of the degree. In BPT, 6 months of the course duration are dedicated to an internship. Students who’ve passed 10+2 in the biology stream are eligible for applying to BPT courses. There is also an entrance test to get into colleges. The popularity of such an entrance test is NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), which is a national level test for medical students to get into colleges of their interest. A cut off is decided for every college and a student must procure the cut off mark to get into the college and pursue this course.

B. Sc. in physiotherapy is also one of the widely know physiotherapy courses and the graduates of this course work to rehabilitate the elderly and the injured due to accidents or other reasons. Some of the most popular colleges offering this course are Christian Medical College [CMC], Vellore, Madras Medical College Chennai, Sri Ramachandra University Chennai, Seth G S Medical College, Mumbai, Baba Farid University of Health Science, etc. There is a lot of competition to get into these colleges but once in, there is a good future as physiotherapy is an ever-growing field. Some of the graduates may even go on to do an MD to set up their own clinics. Physiotherapy courses are recognized by the UGC and health ministry of India.

The average physiotherapist’s salary is Rs. 2,92,000 per annum which is slightly less than that of engineers or doctors. This is only because of the huge number of physiotherapists already present in India. There are a lot of jobs that offer very high amounts of money to physiotherapists. One of such is sports. Any sports team needs physiotherapists and if it’s a premier league such as the IPL, the pay is huge when compared to the average salary. Physiotherapists can work closely with athletes of many sports and can lead a lavish life. But, it does take effort to get there and the salary of physiotherapists is unpredictable and depends on the job. But, the pay of physiotherapists seems to increase in sports and recreation fields and one must aim to get into a job there if one wishes a better salary. In medicine, however, physiotherapy is used as supplementary medicine generally, and for this reason, does not fetch a high salary.
